Past Simple Tense

1. Formation

The Past Simple tense is formed using:

Subject + past form of the verb (regular verbs +ed, irregular verbs vary)

Examples:

• I visited my grandparents last weekend.
• She studied for the test.
• They went to the beach.

2. Uses of the Past Simple

A. Completed actions in the past

• I watched a movie last night.
• She finished her homework.
• They traveled to Italy last summer.

B. Past habits or routines

• We always played football after school.

C. A sequence of past events

• I woke up, brushed my teeth, and left for work.
• She opened the door and walked inside.
• They arrived at the airport, checked in, and boarded the plane.

3. Common Time Expressions

• Yesterday – I met my friend yesterday.
• Last (week, month, year) – She traveled to Spain last summer.
• Ago – They moved here two years ago.
• In (specific past year) – He was born in 1990.
• When – When I was a child, I loved cartoons.
