The Present Continuous tense is used to describe actions that are happening right now or around the present moment. It shows that the action is in progress and ongoing.
Form of the Present Continuous:
Subject + am/is/are + Verb-ing
Example: I am working right now.
Example: She is reading a book.
Example: They are playing soccer.
2. How to form the Present Continuous:
For "I": Use am.
Example: I am studying English.
For singular subjects (he, she, it): Use is.
Example: He is eating lunch.
For plural subjects (we, you, they): Use are.
Example: We are watching a movie.
3. When do we use the Present Continuous?
Actions happening right now:
This refers to actions that are occurring at the moment of speaking.
Example: She is cooking dinner.
Actions happening around the present moment:
This can also refer to actions happening during a period of time around now (but not exactly at the moment of speaking).
Example: I am studying for exams this week.
Future plans or arrangements:
We use the Present Continuous to talk about future plans that are already arranged.
Example: We are meeting friends tomorrow.
4. Spelling Changes with Verb-ing
For most verbs: Add -ing.
Example: play β playing, work β working
If the verb ends in βe,β drop the βeβ and add -ing.
Example: make β making, write β writing
For one-syllable verbs with a single vowel and a single consonant at the end: Double the consonant and add -ing.
Example: run β running, sit β sitting
If the verb ends in βy,β donβt change it.
Example: play β playing, enjoy β enjoying
5. Negative Form of the Present Continuous:
To make a negative sentence, add not after am/is/are.
Example: I am not studying.
Example: He is not eating dinner.
Example: They are not watching TV.
6. Question Form of the Present Continuous:
To form a question, invert the subject and am/is/are.
